SOUPÇON’S HISTORY

If these walls could talk…

Tucked away in the alley off 2nd Street, Soupçon has been a cornerstone of Crested Butte’s dining scene for nearly 50 years.

Housed in a historic miner’s cabin built by the Kochevar family, the space originally served as a residence, even welcoming the birth of a child within its walls in the 1930s.

By the 1960s, the cabin transformed into a wine stube and restaurant, eventually becoming Soupçon in 1975, founded by Candy Smith.

Over the decades, our intimate, French-inspired fine dining restaurant has been home to some of Crested Butte’s most talented chefs, fostering a tradition of culinary excellence within our old storied walls.

Under the guidance of our Chef & Owner John Leonardi, we continue to push the boundaries of flavor and hospitality in our small mountain town, while honoring our long-standing reputation as a must-visit destination.

JOHN LEONARDI

Chef & Owner

John started here in 2011, working the line as a sous chef. In 2019, he took over the restaurant, and since then, has touched every plate that leaves the kitchen.

John brings a blend of Italian roots, French-inspired culinary training, and a commitment to excellence that defines Soupçon’s unique charm.

A Culinary Institute of America grad, Chef John took over ownership in 2019 after rising through the ranks, proudly carrying forward the restaurant’s rich legacy in Crested Butte while infusing it with his own creative touch.

Guided by seasonal ingredients, classical technique, and intentional flavor combinations, Chef John aims to deliver a dining experience that feels refined yet warmly personal. Every detail at Soupçon — from the carefully considered menu to attentive, genuine service — reflects his commitment to making each guest’s visit memorable.

Chef John continues to work the line nightly; he and the team believe in perfection on every plate, every time.
